The Nazca Lines are a bit off the beaten path for some people, but entirely worth the trip down from Paracas. The Nazca Lines have gained their fame for gigantic geoglyphs traced into the soil, with some ranging in lengths over 900ft or 275m long! Due to lack of rain in this particular area in Peru, the Nazca Lines remain in pristine condition dating back thousands of years. Ancient alien theorists will claim the lines were carved with the help of aliens, but in reality nobody knows the exact purpose behind the figures. Some of the more accepted theories include that it was a large astronomical calendar, a ritual water map, or a way for the Nazca culture to communicate with their gods.

When visiting the Nazca Lines, there are several ways to view them. The best way to see the lines are from the air to really appreciate the scale and quantity of the geoglyphs. Another way to see a few of the geoglyphs is from the road using a lookout. The lookout towers are good for people who don't like smaller aircrafts, are worried about becoming sick, or who don't have the budget. However, the flight offers a better view of geoglyphs and the ability to see more than on the road.

Authors note:

Out of all the Peruvian experiences we had, the Nazca Lines rank among the top and are certainly a memory we will not forget. It is difficult to wrap our minds around how giant the lines are, even now. It is easy to see why people would think that extraterrestrial life helped create these lines, because they were created on a grand scale and with incredible precision. Not to mention you are only able to see most of them from an aerial view! For these reasons, we highly recommend visiting the Nazca Lines in Nazca, and paying a bit more for the flight to get the most out of your experience.
